#250293 (In Topic #229862)
Hi there,
(I'm new here so if i'm doing something wrong tell me)
I recently inherited 3 Motorola GP338 radios which I want to reprogram so they can be sold online.
I have tried everything I can possibly think of but no matter what i do i receive the 'Couldn't open port. Check whether Device/RIB are powered on or not…'
Below I have layed out everything that i have tried in my attempt to read the radios.
I downloaded the right software (CPS R06.12.05) for my region, installed it on an old computer (Windows XP SP3) because the software wouldn't work properly at all on anything newer. I then attached the programming cable (Serial to USB Prolific chip) with the drivers from the included CD installed and then turned on the radio. I made sure the battery was above 70% (I heard somewhere that matters) but when attempting to read the device the error appears.
I'm definitely using the right COM port in the options and the 'Application Launcher' software is running in the background.
I'm thinking that the Serial to USB converter inside the programming cable might not be functioning correctly but I don't really want to go out and buy a serial only cable if i can help it.
I'm really at a loss here and I'm hoping you guys can help me out.
Please tell me if you need anymore info.
Thanks,
Ezra

Motorola GP338 Plus display radio - the smallest in Motorola's Professional Series. It is compact, light and fit easily into the palm of your hand. A versatile alternative for those who require additional features to meet expanding communication needs.

That is a commuaction issue you are having unless the laptop has on serial port on it, cgo in device manager and check if there is a conflict there .i program alost of those radio .but with thw success using straight serial port
Thanks for the response,
I'll see what I can find in control panel (maybe disabling the other COM port might help?)
Do you reckon I would have more luck using a straight serial cable rather than USB?
Download Comm Tool usually comes with R03 software for the 339
This will read any version GM338-339 and any region, so if that works then its either Region Problem or not Compatible R06 Version, Comm Tool only works on Ports 1-4 ,this will Prove any cable problems
Software Motorola Gp338

Looks like you have a handshaking issue between PORT / CABLE and RAD
You've said the COM PORT isn't working so that means the CABLE is connected and the computer doesn't see it.
1. Driver ? Installed Prolific ?
2. Cable USB ?
3. Radio Contacts ' Please Clean '
4. Windows XP works well with GP338 GP328 GP340
However my GP338 Plus works fine with Win 10 using a USB with a Prolific Driver … works like a Charm. Please send me information on your Hardware if the computer see's the cable> There should be a COM XX showing under hardware. If that's working cable and computer handshaking. From there, there shouldn't be a problem reading the radio. Please indicate what driver your using please. Thanks
